Don Soper I now have every Emily Barker recording I can get my hands on. I had not had a chance to listen to this one until today at work. There is not one song on this album that is not GREAT. Very hard to pick a favorite!!! Favorite track: All Love Knows.

CS Love the harmonies and accordian/fiddle combo. Favorite track: Bloated, Blistered, Aching Heart.
Peter Shoobridge

Peter Shoobridge The best music works with a voice and guitar with little else. Perhaps a violin and a harmonica or harmonium.

This is authentic music, stripped down to essentials. Fabulous songs that will lodge in your mind and change the way you listen.
Jenni

Jenni Emily's voice is perfectly clear without shouting and sounds so beautifully calm. It's the perfect accompaniment for the Wallander programs when filmed aerially. viewing a perfect road or beach.
I can hear every plucking of the guitar strings as if I were sitting close by, plus the violins are magic. So well played and arranged. Its a joy to listen to.
Everyone should listen to Emily as we all need that calm in our lives at some point. These are such delightful songs. What else can I say. Favorite track: Nostalgia.

Nostalgia 03:52
Tram wires cross Melbourne skies Cut my red heart in two My knuckles bleed down Johnston street On a door that shouldn’t be in front of me Twelve thousand miles away from your smile I’m twelve thousand miles away from me Standing on the corner of Brunswick Got the rain coming down and mascara on my cheek Oh whisper me words in the shape of a bay Shelter my love from the wind and the rain Crow fly be my alibi And return this fable on your wing Take it far away to where gypsies play Beneath metal stars by the bridge Oh write me a beacon so I know the way Guide my love through night and through day Only the sunset knows my blind desire for the fleeting Only the moon understands the beauty of love When held by a hand like the aura of nostalgia

The wind bends the poplars Your words bend my heart I let you in, and you came closer Now I’m learning all love knows I’ve got photos and letters That I’ve stared at now for so long It’s got to the point where I can’t see you And I’m learning all love knows There’s a tapestry of stars above And you’re the brightest by far I let you in and you came closer Now I’m learning all love know Lover this long distance is soon to be shortened Lover this time difference is soon to reach an end I went down to the ocean And blew a kiss out across the sea The wind bends the poplars And I’m learning all love knows And I’m learning all love know All love knows All love knows All love knows

Disappear 03:06
If a picture paints a thousand words then a song paints a thousand pictures And if these seas could sing when the waves came in a shoal of secrets would wash upon the shore I’m the plummet and the rise of the bay’s mooring buoys I’m the powdery sand dunes white I’m the omen of bad luck and I curse all I touch With my past that won’t pass away quickly enough But I’ve learnt how to disappear without going anywhere I’ve learnt how to disappear without going anywhere One spring I slipped overboard without saying a word And I ploughed down through the water like an anchor I went to a dark address where I finally confessed That though we went our different ways we had come to the same end This is how you disappear without ever leaving This is how you disappear without ever leaving The Southerly calls and it’s pointing to the north Beckoning that I follow Am I the singer or the sung? Have I faith or have I none? Love’s the fear now that I must swallow Oh and this is how you disappear without going anywhere This is how you disappear without going anywhere

Your bloated heart my love Bleeds into mine Your bloated heart my love Beats with mine O’er the roughest seas, o’er mountains steep All over the roughest seas Got an aching heart babe That won’t keep quiet Got a behind bars heart babe Especially in the night Oh navigate me dear Take me to the clearing Navigate me dear We’ve got blistered hearts Where we’re apart Blistered hearts When we’re apart Through every hour of every day All the hours and all the days

Today Bright Phoebus she smiled down on me for the very first time For the very first time she smiled on me Today Bright Phoebus she smiled down on me for the very first time For the very first time she smiled on me No more clouds no more rain Gone the clouds she smiled again Today Bright Phoebus she smiled down on me for the very first time For the very first time she smiled on me This morning cockerel crowed and he woke me for the very first time For the very first time he crowed for me He flapped his wings and he strut around for me for the very first time For the very first time he crowed for me No more clouds no more rain Gone the clouds she smiled again Today Bright Phoebus she smiled down on me for the very first time For the very first time she smiled on me

Hush all you murderous thoughts or I’ll learn what I love through what I’ve lost Storm, storm inside my cup tell your tempest winds to ease up For I’m skating on thin ice over a surface called my life But my sense of ceremony’s strong, we can pretend that nothing’s wrong This song is a scream from the shadows where I’ve been But I pray your lips don’t utter this until after I leave If I’m a mote upon the depth of time then what is consequence to a crime? I’ve not sinned as such but silenced much for the sake of my loved one’s lives And I’ve taught my nerves to lay down and my tears to stay at bay With a sip of tea and some chivalry I can cope with all the strain This song is a secret from a place where I have been But I pray your mouth don’t shout it out until I have made my leave All the opposites interchange Love and hate rearrange Every truth I ever claimed For how long must I walk with no shoes and no coat against these winds? Will this squall see me fall and raise all I’ve buried to my lips? And there’s no limit on my love but my heart can overflow Pass through the valves on the back of blood and out to every cell This song is a plea for I so want you to see All that you could never guess there could possibly be There could possibly be There could possibly be

The Greenway 03:42
There’s a place that I seek when I need somewhere to hide It’s a place that I go when I need some peace of mind Don’t seem to mind if I smile, don’t seem to care if I don’t I’m a fly upon the wall, I’m in company and I am alone There’s a message on the bridge in graffiti-written words And it reads as an answer or it reads as nothing at all Don’t seem to mind if I show, don’t seem to care if I don’t I’m a bird upon the bridge, I look out and I look in When the city’s back is turned it looks a lot like this When a mind begins to burn it needs a place like this Don’t seem to mind if I’m right, don’t seem to care if I’m wrong I’m the dirty river flow, I need you so that I can let go

Sideline 03:26
Holding out to see you Hope it’s only a while Holding out to see you Hope it’s only a while You asked me such a tall question In the erstwhile I waited For the right moment to come And when it blossomed I picked it And we tasted that we should soon have to part And now your absence is profound Now your absence is profound You asked me such a tall question For days I had waited on the sideline For days I had waited on the sideline

Breath 03:54
I woke up this morning without you by my side So I beckoned my mind to come walk for a while We strolled back to a night when your breath fell around me And your arms were holding me tight I see rain outside my window today But I feel sunshine inside me since you came my way All your kisses are like a food I could live off for days And the longer I stay here the longer I wanna stay Chorus: Oh-oo I wanna hold you a long tim Oh-oo I want you a long while For home is my head laying down on your shoulder And there is know where I’d rather be Love was before a cold, gravel road There were cracks in my boots and I got mud on my toes But I walked and I walked until I came to a well Where the wish it was granted and the two of us fell Chorus Can’t look at your hand without imaging it on me Can’t look in your eyes without seeing I’m blinded By your words and your lips and by your tender hand movements Oh what did you do to me? Chorus

Oh Journey 04:54
On a boat in London waters By the edge of your lip’s corners In the palm of your hand’s affection I’m forgetting where I begin In a place that’s been returned to But it feels like someone I know longer know There’s a life I’m trying to follow But I’m held to where I have been Oh journey oh journey won’t you tell me when I’m right or wrong Oh journey oh journey won’t you tell me where is it I’m going All the moments that can’t be forgotten Sometimes circle like birds of prey They get in your words and in your veins Like syllables and pain So move us through this day And move us through tomorrow And yesterday can be but A shadow, a shadow, a shadow Oh journey oh journey won’t you keep him in the safe of my arms Oh journey oh journey won’t you shelter us from all love’s storms Life has got a temper that I can never predict And if change is the only thing constant I’m gonna be constantly changing All the crocuses are in bloom The winter will soon be over And I want to ride like the tail of a kite Destined to the wind, destined to the wind, destined to the wind

about

The second album by Emily Barker, this time in the company of The Red Clay Halo, was recorded in live takes, producing a raw and exposed, honest and up-close album that journeys through folk-infused, country-tinged songs that makes one feel like they’re sat cross-legged in the middle of the circle as the band plays around them.

‘chamber-folk of the highest order’ – Rock n Reel

‘stripped free of studio frippery and all the better for its carefree simplicity’ **** - Q

‘stunningly beautiful’ – Electric Ghost

‘music that's going to take you away from the scummy smog filled streets and leave you in a warm forest dappled with green light shining through the leaves of sycamores and ancient oak’ – Unpeeled.net
