Emily Barker & The Red Clay Halo are delighted to bring you this, the second single from Almanac in the form of 'Calendar'.
Inspiration for the song (and the album title) comes from the poem ‘Almanac’ by Italian writer Primo Levi. With words as relevant now as they were when written in the 1970’s, he captures in his verse our present day concerns with global warming, commenting:
“Spreading the desert to the forests of the Amazon;
To the living hearts of our cities; to our very own hearts.”
Emily’s lyrics address the need to respect the earth
and to do what we can to look after it. With more than a passing nod to the importance of the folk song, in terms of its role in preserving experiences and spreading new messages, the chorus rings out “then let's sing it again to remember where we've been, all we lost and all we’ve learnt from each other.”
Emily and The Red Clay Halo are joined by guest musicians, Ted Barnes on mandolin, Nat Butler on drums, Ali Friend on double bass and Liz Jones on trumpet to reach full stretch on this sparkling pop song.

lyrics
Calendar
will we hold onto the light or just play until it fades?
will we draw a curtain across the sky and count down all our days?
will our veins be filled with sand and our hearts be filled with ache?
when the desert takes the land and the ground begins to shake
ground begins to shake, ground begins to shake
Chorus:
No! Let's sing us a song 'til all seas become calm
'til all selves become one another
then let's sing it again to remember where we've been
all we lost and all we’ve learnt from each other
Will the winds above the lake and the flowers in the glen
one night sleep and never wake, one night dream a darkened end
will all power turn to pain when the birds take flight and leave?
will our intellect come save us or fail us when in need
or fail us when in need, fail us when in need
Chorus
To the long-forgotten fields where your childhood memories lay
to all the trees you ever climbed and the rivers where you bathed
to all tomorrows shores that your children will all comb
to the comets and the stars that they’ll be wishing on
they’ll be wishing on, they’ll be wishing on
Chorus
